Drakensberg Mountains Tour

  1. Arrive from Durban
Travel to the Valley of 1000 Hills to enjoy the magnificent panorama. Short drive through the colonial town of Pietermaritzburg famous for its many Victorian buildings. View sites of the spectacular Howick Falls where the Umgeni river plunges 95 metres over dolomite cliffs. Lunch stop at a local country inn along the Midlands meander. Travel through the Natal Midlands to the central Drakensberg. Dinner and overnight at a local Guesthouse.

  2. 4x4 Drive up the Sani Pass
Morning departure in a 4x4 vehicle for ascent of the steep and spectacular Sani Pass, up into the Kingdom of Lesotho; also known as the "Roof of Africa". Visit a local Sotho Village, and learn about their traditions and way of life. Lunch at the highest hostelry (2844m) in Southern Africa. Return to Durban Late Afternoon. NB: Passports required for Lesotho.

  3. Sani Pass / Lesotho
Go on an organised tour up the Sani pass in a 4x4. Ron Gold can tell you quite a bit about the area and the history. You get to visit a Basuto village and experience some impressive views

  4. Day trails through the lower reaches of the Drakensberg
Walking the lower reaches below the Drakensberg escarpment is the reason you came to this area. This is the most impressive the Drakensberg has to offer and we recommend Giants Castle. More of this walking beneath the escarpment can be found at Injasuti, Monks Cowl, Champane, Cathederal and Royal Natal. Its similar but the scenery is different and all spectacular. Self guided or with a local guide.

  5. To the top of the Escarpment and the 950m Waterfall
There is only one place you can get to the top of the Drakensberg escarpment and back down again in one day and that is at the Sentinel. The drive alone is spectacular. The walk is 5 hours 2,5 hours each way. You ascend the last 20 meters using a chain ladder and are rewarded with a view overlooking the Royal Natal Reserve. Also you are at the source of the Tugela river where it falls some 950m. 2nd highest in the world.

  6. Overnight hiking in the Drakensberg Wilderness
Spend a few day and nights in the Drakensberg Mountains. Stay in a bushman cave or carry your own tent and experience the remoteness of the Drakensberg. You can go with a guide who will provide the equipment or organize a trip on your own

  7. San (Bushman) rock art in the Southern Drakensberg
Kamberg offers the most spectacular examples of rock art to be found in South Africa. There are many places where Bushman rock art can be found but this is one of the few sites where your imagination is not a prerequisite. Kamberg is situated in the southern Drakensberg (More sandstone and valleys) which gives you another opportunity to experience a different aspect of the Berg.

  8. Guided wild flower tours of the Drakensberg
Go with Les Robinson and experience her knowledge of the Drakensberg wild flowers and just for good measure enjoy her picnic lunch farm style.
